Rams Season Kicks Off In Darwin
Thurbo - 23 January 2011
The Epping Rams got their first taste of 7's rugby in over a decade with a good showing at the Darwin Hottest 7's.
The action on the footy field was hot, with tries a plenty. The Rams sent two teams to the Nothern Territory event - the Epping Rams RC team and the Epping Knackered Rams team.
The first day saw the Rams put in a spirited display against seasoned 7's teams, but trully impressed in their third games of the day.
The Epping Knackered Rams took on the eventual winners of the Gekko Cup, Palmerston, and scored two tries to have the score at 12-10 down. With the Knackered Rams camped on the Palmerston try line, a length of the field intercept from Palmerston stopped the Knackered Rams in their tracks, going down 19-10.
The Epping Rams RC had the better of the play against locals Swampdogs, and rock solid defence saw them take out the match 20-0.
With the Rams RC team finishing 3rd in their pool, and the Knackered Rams finishing 4th, it meant they drew each other in the quarter finals of the Gekko Cup. The Rams RC ended up winners 30-10, and a semi final against another Territorian team, the Groote Mudchooks.
The Rams RC scored early in the semi, but the Groote Eylandt team finished off stronger, taking out the Gekko Cup semi 22-5.
The Rams will continue their build up to the 2011 season with their first foray into 10's rugby in late February at the Hawkesbury Valley 10's.
The Rams train Tuesday & Thursday nights at Woods Street Reserve in North Epping through February.
